Summary
3 Wishes is a magical realism and science fiction novel by Stephen Vizinczey. The story is about Jim Taylor, vice president of a computer company. He fires thousands of people to save his job, but ends up getting sacked as well. In his attempt to drown himself in the sea, a space kid in a fly-whirl disk lands near him and grants him the power to make 3 wishes.
Review
This story was so heartbreaking until Neb, a kid who says he’s from the Centre of the Universe made it so exciting to read; I enjoyed it from that point onwards. It gave me a nostalgic feeling because of its familiar topic, but the overall narrative was relatively new because it was unpredictable. I mean, who would ever know what you want to wish for? If I were given three wishes, I would’ve been so careful because I’d want to make sure they’re exactly what I want in life.
There are four things I love about this book: (1) The way that the author described Jim’s state of mind during his miserable moments was on point. I’ve been there, so I can very much relate with the situation. (2) I love Jim and Lesley’s reactions when they got younger. I would’ve been surprised and ecstatic as well. (3) Jim’s backstory explained very much about his character, so even if it took more than half the book to finally get to the exciting part, the time was all worth it. And lastly, (4) Neb was adorable and a little naughty, so it was very entertaining to read Jim and Lesley’s interactions with him.
I’m giving this book 5 out of 5 stars. This fascinating journey of a man’s complex life took me to a whirlwind of emotions. I highly recommend it to MATURE readers who want to experience a fusion of romance, drama, magical realism, and science fiction.
