Book Review: Awaken

Review

Awaken is a soft sci-fi romance by D Hailstock. The story involves teleportation, which is a staple of science fiction, but it mostly tackles societal, cultural, and psychogical issues, rather than scientific or technological details. I could also be wrong, and this novel should be considered a fantasy romance. Genre aside, I think this book has great potential and needs to be discovered by the right readers.

The story focuses on a lesbian girl named Aria who’s in love with a straight girl named Danielle. She thinks that the only chance she has is with Danielle’s side effect (an alternate persona that comes out as a side effect of teleporting). It is quite imaginative that when one teleports, there is a side effect, which happens to be another persona who looks exactly the same but with a different personality (and gender preference). I think the coolest superpower there can be is teleportation. But the side effect of having an alter ego is more disadvantageous than helpful. It can really complicate things. There is more to the story than romance and teleporting, but I’ll leave that to its prospective readers.

Overall, I’m giving it 3 out of 5 stars for its creativity and originality but I think it will resonate more with young adults who are open-minded and/or belong to the LGBTQ community.
