Summary
The Black and White of It is a memoir by Kelvin Atkinson. Told through his own eyes, the story begins in 1994 at the age of 22 years old when he was in financial distress. He had resorted to gambling at a casino because he was three months late on his car payment, two months late on his rent, and in the midst of summer, the electricity had been shut off, and his house phone was dead. He gambled with the little money he had left and lost it. By an unexpected stroke of luck, a lady gave him $100 to get back in the game and he won $2000. This is just the start of his journey to many more unexpected twists and turns in his life that not many ordinary people would’ve had the chance to experience. But of course, life isn’t only about luck. There are also misfortunes. In this book, Kelvin Atkinson relives his extraordinary life where he is met with a series of good and bad times towards his journey to self-discovery.
Review
What a way to tell a story! A fascinating and heartwarming real-life story of Kelvin Atkinson and the remarkable life he lived! I got pulled into his story from the start and couldn’t put the book down. It was so relatable because I also came from a well-off family until everything turned upside down when my papa died. But of course, my life isn’t anywhere near Kelvin’s but there are struggles that I can relate with. Overall, I’m giving this story 5 out of 5 stars. It was beautifully told. Very enlightening. Very informative. It tackled a lot of topics such as family, friendships, romantic relationships, fatherhood, embracing one’s true self, and so on. There are so many things in this story that will open the eyes of readers and I cannot wait for people to discover this book.
