50 Berkeley Square is a horror mystery thriller by David J McCran. The story begins with Maria Holden who is being chased by someone, or something sinister. Unfortunately, she winds up jumping from the building, leading to a horrible death. The incident piques the interest of Jim Cartwright, a man in his 20s who works in the accounts department at the London International Gazette. His interest on Mary’s case and great desire to become a reporter, propels him to uncover the truth behind the grueling deaths in the haunted townhouse on Berkeley Square. Upon getting exposed to the most awaited truth, he is forced on a journey that leads him to a fate he didn’t wish for.
Review
I’d probably have to do some research to check which information are based on facts, and which ones are product of the author’s imagination. I’ve had my own experience with a few unexplainable out-of-this-world incidents in my life but luckily, none were harmful or deadly. With my own experiences, I can resonate with Jim whose career requires him to base things on facts and evidence but is being challenged to open his eyes to something unfathomable.
I like how the story began because it launched right into the focal point of the story then traveled back to some horrendous occurrences in the past. Stories with dual timeline never fail to give a mysterious vibe, so as a fan of all kinds of thriller, this book was very entertaining for me as it switched between past and present. I think it maybe a tactic for telling horror stories where you pick up the pieces of information from the past to uncover an incident in the present time.
Overall, I’m giving this book 5 out of 5 stars for its smooth flow and meticulous fictional retelling of the infamous haunted house. The well-depicted narrative is very indicative of the author’s passion in reliving some stories about 50 Berkeley Square and honing those stories through Jim Cartwright’s inner motivation. I highly recommend this book to readers who are into horror & mystery thriller.
