Book Review: Alien or Alian

Summary

As a freshman university student, Ozias has no friends and it has always been like that. Since he was born, the only friends he could consider are his parents. He could blame it on the fact that his family has moved countless times in the last 14 years, but the truth is, his lack of self-confidence hinders him from meeting new people.

When he sees a shooting star, he takes that chance to make a wish to find someone who wants to talk to him and spend time with him. That same night, he hears a knock on the door and peeks through the door’s peephole. Ozias couldn’t believe his eyes as he sees his two-year-long crush, Ethen Knillimhyr. Does this mean his wish has been granted? Or is there something more than he wished for that could change his ordinary life?

Review

Alien or Alian is a science fiction novel by Ayesha Boison. When I started reading this novel, the strong opening instantly captured my interest because the narrative was indicative of an author that shows rather than tell a story. I was immediately pulled into Ozias’ character and knew what it felt like to walk on a dark and snowy night, looking at the house of the star football captain who has been a long-time crush. Then, it turned out that he’s an alien with a twin brother, and that aliens have been living on Earth for billions of years! From then on, I got hooked. Other than the strong opening, I liked the characters and their development, most especially Ozias, Ethen and Ezra.

I think the author nailed all critical elements of this story: the narrative was beautifully written, the plot was intriguing, the characters and setting were fascinating, the dialogues were entertaining. Hence, I’m giving this novel 5 out of 5 stars and highly recommend it to all readers who love science fiction, particularly alien stories.
