Book Review: Bertha

Summary

Bertha is a biographical novel written by Lisa M. Hutchison based on her grandmother. The story began with Bertha’s mother, Emilia, then continued with Bertha’s life after her mother died. Between 1853 to 1945, the book showed generations of abuse, and how Bertha was able to live an extraordinary life despite the many unfortunate events that happened.

Review

This book was beautifully written! It’s one of the most amazing stories I have ever read that is based on true events, and it was a page turner! I couldn’t put this down even if my eyes were telling me to go to sleep! I just couldn’t sleep without finishing it!

I love every bit of journey the author shared regardless of which time in Bertha and her family’s life was being retold. Whether it was a time of abuse, a time of great loss, a time of hope, a time of love, every single chapter of this novel was perfectly written. It didn’t matter how much hatred I felt for August, Karl, and even the pastor because in God’s time, Bertha’s sufferings were replaced with well-deserved love, lots of blessings, and an extraordinary life.

I am giving this book 5 out of 5 stars. I have invested emotions in this book that are both delightful and spiteful, but in the end, the only emotion I felt was complete admiration for the author who shared her grandmother’s exceptional story so perfectly.
