Summary
Best.Mom.Never is a memoir by Eunice Bowens. It’s a story of the abuse she experienced from her mother who was a single parent, a functioning alcoholic, and a bipolar. At a young age of five, she received corporal punishment and at the age of 13, she was put out of home and given a one-way ticket back to Louisiana where she travelled unsupervised. She faced more pain than necessary growing up, but she chose to survive with a positive attitude.
Review
It pains me a lot to read something like this. You can really tell that the author suffered from abuse, anxiety, and depression because of the way she constructed the narrative. This kind of writing is very indicative of long years of torment. There were times she repeated telling the same things over and over. It was probably stuck in her thoughts and she wanted to put emphasis on that pain.
I’m giving this book 3 out of 5 stars. It’s heartbreaking and at the same time, commendable that the author was able to surpass the abuse. I don’t feel good about not giving this a higher score, but I can’t hide the fact that this book really needs editing and formatting for the sake of the readers.
