Summary
Cardinals is an occult fiction and urban fantasy by Ian Conner. The story begins nine hundred years before Christ when God cast his wife Asherah out of Heaven. She has been cursed to feed on human and roam the Earth as the first vampire. Centuries go by and more vampires are created by Asherah. Those who have been fed on, but not offered the vampire's blood are called the Cardinals. They have many of a vampire's abilities and fewer of their weaknesses. When it is revealed that rubies are the red tears of angels and can avoid destruction, the Cardinals are set out on a mission to collect them. Asherah is also determined to retrieve the rubies that will lift the curse and send her back to Heaven.
Review
I like the complexity of this book. Its multiple timeline and location that span many lifetimes, from Before Christ to the present, showing the origin of the story, along with the descendants of the characters. On that note, it also contains a myriad of diverse characters. I like that it’s multi-dimensional. It shows the story from different angles with different character motivations, and there’s more going on than just strange occult happenings.
Another thing is that the author took his time to make gradual progress in the development of the story. It gave me time to understand the characters more in terms of inner motivation. It’s not hard to get hooked in reading this because the beginning will launch you right into a strong and intriguing story about how Asherah was cast out and cursed to become the first vampire to walk the earth and feed on human blood. This book contains a new vampire twist that will surely entice readers. Hence, I’m giving this book 5 out of 5 stars for its imaginative plot and fascinating characters.
