Book Review: Cathedral Tower

Summary

9 Gang City was formed 220 years ago when the vampires, along with the witches, achieved victory against the Christian vampires. They ruled under the leadership of Vampire Niculi and Queen Ziana of the witches, and reigned with terror and darkness. Then, Gideon, a vampire warrior, slayed Niculi and Ziana, finally giving 9 Gang City peace and structure. In return for his heroic act, the city voted Gideon as their first elected leader. But with power comes corruption. After decades of false hope and religious tyranny, Gideon had a change of heart, bringing 9 Gang City on the brink of war again.

Review

Cathedral Tower is an occult fantasy by Ross Simister. I get to read stories like this once every long while and they never fail to give that classic vibes and nostalgic feeling. Vampire, witch, and werewolf stories have been there all my life and even way before my time, so I always have high expectations that the next story I'll read should have a thing or two that would set it apart from the other vampires, witches, and werewolf stories. In this book, the author brought in cannibals, pagans, messengers, Irish, and Chinese characters to provide a story about a grueling fight for supremacy. This book delivered a good one, but it could’ve been better.

The storyline is quite intriguing, the setting is cinematic, and the political and social issues tackled in this story were very informative. However, it was lacking entertainment value due to its failure to provide suspense. Also, there were too many characters that my memory could handle, so I couldn’t remember most of them. Nevertheless, I'm giving this book 4 out of 5 stars and recommend it to readers who are into occult fantasies.
