Book Review: Devotion

Updated: Jan 8, 2021

Summary

Devotion: A Novel of the Vietnam War is a historical military and romance fiction, and Book 1 of Michael Pandolfo’s Fidelity Series. The story revolves around Mitch and Sharon, a newly-wed couple, and Joi, a 19-year-old hooch girl. As a young intelligence officer, Mitch is sent to Thailand where Joi happens to be his servant. Despite his fondness for the girl, he remains faithful to Sharon, but when he sends her a photo of Joi, all hell breaks loose as Mitch is torn between his military duties and his duties as a husband.

Review

This book is a deep dive into the heart and mind of a military man and an impressive take on the Vietnam War. The intricate details of life in the military made this book remarkable. As far as the writing goes, it was good because you can really tell that the author knows and understands the ins and outs of the Vietnam War, and the impact of life-threatening responsibilities in the military. But when it comes to the plot, I can’t say it’s unique because it’s not the first military story I’ve read where the protagonist is torn between his military and marriage responsibilities.

Overall, I’m giving this book 4 out of 5 stars. I recommend this to readers who are interested in love and war stories of fidelity and infidelity.
