Book Review: Flaherty's Crossing

Summary

Flaherty’s Crossing is a contemporary romance and family drama by Kaylin McFarren. The story revolves around Kate Flaherty, a successful yet emotionally stifled artist. Her husband Drew, a powerful attorney, leaves an alarming voicemail as a result of their shaky marriage. Before even figuring out what to do about it, the hospice calls to let her know of her father’s deathbed. Just as she’s about to leave her husband a message, she crashes her car in the middle of nowhere.

Review

I can’t believe this is Kaylin McFarren’s debut novel! I can understand why it has received literary awards. I myself was touched by this book’s strong ability to bring back the emotions I had before and after my papa died. Out of all the other books I’ve read by Kaylin, this one almost made me cry. The story felt so real and, in many ways, I can relate with the characters. This is possibly the only book that is hard to review because it reminds me about a lot of things in my past and it makes me emotional. Nevertheless, I’m just glad that the story ended well.

Overall, I’m giving this book 5 out of 5 stars. It imparted life lessons and pulled me into a myriad of emotions that I thought I had forgotten already. This book has a beautifully written narrative, well-developed and relatable characters, and many touching dialogues. I highly recommend this book to readers who want a story about love and forgiveness.
