Book Review: Julia's Gifts

Summary

Julia’s dream is to meet the man she has conjured up in her mind, a man she calls her “beloved.” She wonders why she hasn’t met him when she’s been praying for years. Some of her friends are already married, so she hopes to find the man she would marry, and she feels that 1918 would be the year she would meet him. Each December, Julia buys a Christmas gift for her beloved. Little did she know, these gifts would play a crucial role when she volunteers as a medical aid worker during the Great War. Set from Philadelphia to France, Julia’s transformation from a hopeless romantic to a dedicated volunteer will unfold.

Review

Julia’s Gifts is a historical fiction by Ellen Gable and the first book in the Great War – Great Love series. I’d have to be honest. At first, it felt silly for Julia to be buying gifts for a man she hasn’t even met, and I didn’t like that idea. It’s not something a normal person would do in any era, whether it’s during the progressive era, modern, postmodern age, nobody would have thought about buying gifts for a person you just conjured up in your mind. That’s the most ridiculous thing really. But as the story progressed, I realized these gifts play an important role in the story and give a deeper meaning to Julia’s life amidst the Great War and that made me admire her as the lead character in the story. Overall, I’m giving it 5 out of 5 stars. I enjoyed reading this heartfelt wartime love story. It was truly unpredictable and has a satisfactory ending! Highly recommended to readers who are into love and war novels.
