Summary
Lady of the Play is a historical mystery novel by Deena Lindstedt. The story begins when Cynthia Parsons receives a letter from Sudie McFadden about needing her help in a research project that she hopes to begin shortly. The project concerns an article that she wrote in Marylhurst University's literary review several years ago titled, "Shakespeare, Perhaps a Woman." It turns out that Sudie has found something she knows would be of interest to her concerning the same subject. When the two meet, Cynthia learns that Sudie believes Shakespeare might be a woman, and that woman might be Sudie’s great, great, many times over, great grandmother.
Review
The theory that Shakespeare might be a woman is a very intriguing take on the literary legend, all the more because during the Elizabethan era, the world was full of male chauvinists; there was no equality. Men had control over women, and women must obey to avoid being punished. It makes perfect sense for someone to stay hidden until the public is ready to accept the woman behind the pen.
I love that the story didn’t just revolve around researching to prove that Shakespeare is a woman. The chain of events, both normal and paranormal, and the many coincidences that occurred along the way that led Cynthia to the woman who was Shakespeare, made this book an awesome mystery novel that was hard to put down. The letter towards the end sent me shivers. I know this is fiction, but this must've required extensive research for the author to still preserve a few or some historical facts.
Overall, I’m giving this book 5 out of 5 stars. It was very intriguing and informative! The words were like music to my ears because it’s just so pleasant to read a literary work that talks about literary works as well. Most especially because it talks about one of the greatest writers of all time.
