Summary

Hannah Gordon lived more years in England than in South Africa because she wanted to be away from her father. She was determined to put her past behind until a package came. To her dismay, it was addressed to Leiyah Kleinhans. Hannah asked Beatrice, her housekeeper, to burn it but when she found out the contents of the package, she couldn’t let Hannah bury her past. Beatrice advised her that it was time to tell her daughter Zendaya the truth. And just like that, one by one, Hannah and Beatrice’s secrets were unraveled while Zendaya was torn with a dilemma concerning two men and her frustration towards her mother.

Review

Love Leiyah is a romantic drama and mystery novel by Shan Lee. It is mostly about the story of Hannah and Beatrice that they had to reveal to Zendaya. I think this book has a strong and interesting opening, so I was instantly intrigued and kept on reading until I realized I have finished it. I like the author’s writing style because her narrative is easy to read and there are many suspense moments and plot twists that I think the readers will enjoy. However, I think the tone of voice was too consistent from start to end that there was no longer an emotional pull on situations that needed it. The storytelling was very relaxed that even during the supposedly intense moments, I didn’t get worried or scared or shocked by the sudden twist. Or maybe it’s because I have predicted the twists.

I wish the author had given more depth to the personality of the main characters, most especially that they are women, and they portray the biggest role in the entirety of the story. Sad to say, I didn’t like Hannah, Beatrice, and Zendaya because of their lack of values and decency. I think the only character that I appreciated in this story was Bradley, not because of Stockholm syndrome, but because he did protect Hannah and Zendaya.

Overall, I’m still giving a fair rating of 3 out of 5 stars. While I am not in favor of how the main characters were portrayed in the story, and the fact that the book has poor editing, I think the narrative was well-written. I’m sure that the younger generation will enjoy this book if they have liberated minds. After all, the story is quite entertaining.
