Book Review: Mystery Behind Kuma: The Trilogy

Summary

Mystery Behind Kuma: The Trilogy is an action and adventure children’s book by Freda McEwen. On the first book called Mystery Behind Kuma, Ziglac, the king of Kuma, appoints Wahoka as the caretaker of the forest and gives him Fasida as his wife. The couple lives a happy life until Ambalek, the dragon, lures Fasida into breaking Ziglac’s rules. On the second book, The Trial of Jizlac, Ambalek’s plans against Ziglac’s followers fails, so he accuses them of various crimes. Ziglac’s son, Jizlac, sacrifices himself on behalf of the animals. On the 3rd book, Return of Jizlac, Ambalek wreaks havoc in the lives of Jizlac’s followers.

Review

This was such a creative way to impart human values and Christianity. The three books were representative of Bible stories and characters through personification of animals, to make it more enticing for children to read. If I’m not mistaken, the first book is inspired by the book of Genesis, the second book is inspired by the book of Matthew, and the third one is inspired by the book of Mark. I hope my memory serves me right, but I felt that Ziglac was God, Jizlac was Jesus, Wahoka and Fasida were Adam and Eve, and Ambalek was Judas.

Aside from the trilogy being inspired by the Bible, I also like that the tone of voice adapted the present way of speaking. This makes the narrative and dialogues more comprehensible for children.

Overall, I’m giving this trilogy 5 out of 5 stars. The flow of story was smooth and contains the most important element in children’s books, which is to teach morals and values. I highly recommend this trilogy to children ages 8 years old and above.
