Summary
Not My Chair: The Reformative Story of a Paroled Nevada Death Row Inmate is a biography written by Arlene Krieger about the life of James Allen, Jr. It is a story of a 16-year-old who accidentally killed someone during a burglary, and got sentenced to death. The purpose of the book is not to glorify Mr. Allen, but to stave off other young people from getting caught up in a gang culture, in hope of avoiding the dark side from entering their life.
Review
I’ve had an amazing reading experience with this book. The story of James Allen, Jr. is a great example of how hopeless cases can still have hope. In wanting to give his family a better life, he risked his own and ended up in a very unfortunate circumstance that caused him to be on the death row and spend almost three decades of his life in jail. But his life didn’t stop there, he studied criminal law to help other young and clueless people like him who made mistakes due to the bad environment and situation they were in, and needed a second chance in life. He never stopped believing that with God beside him, he will be given a second chance at life, and finally get his freedom.
I’m giving this book 5 out of 5 stars. This book was well-depicted, well-written, very informative, and instills crucial life lessons that can be very beneficial to the young generation. It was a comprehensive representation of the life of a teenager who went from a kid, to a gospel singer, to a convicted killer who went back to the society and continued to make up for his past mistakes by mentoring ex-cons and troubled youth. He spent his second chance in life by being there for his family, and being there for the young people who need guidance. I highly recommend this to readers who are interested in true-to-life stories.
