Book Review: Royalty of Kentucky

Summary

Royalty of Kentucky is a historical fiction based on factual events. The story revolves around Della Carpenter and Cleveland Sutherland who both belong to a family with an age-old feud. Despite the hurdles, they follow their heart, but end up hurting both families. As they go against their wishes, Della gets pregnant and the lovers get married. Not long, their relationship gets complicated. Cleveland abandons Della so to protect herself and her son, Della defies societal norms by taking their family and relationship issues to court, a courageous journey that not many women of the 20th century would dare take.

Review

At first, I thought this was a star-crossed lovers romance trope like in Romeo and Juliet because of how it started, but I was completely wrong. It turned out to be a story of betrayal and how a woman stood up for herself, regardless of the norms in her society where women just do what they are told to do.

There are three things I like about this book: (1) The romantic moments between Cleve and Della weren’t explicit like in most historical romance novels that I’ve read, (2) Della’s lack of awareness about getting pregnant was representative of women’s naivety in the 20th century, and (3) the court drama towards the end is my most favorite part. Overall, I’m giving this book 5 out of 5 stars. I’ve had an enlightening and inspiring experience and I recommend this book to readers who are into historical fiction.
