Book Review: Silki the Girl of Many Scarves Book 3: Valley of Shadows

Summary

Silki the Girl of Many Scarves: Valley of Shadows is a Native American fiction by Jodi Lea Stewart, and the third and final book to the series. In this book, summer is over and Silki’s best friend Birdie is back. The Navajo Nation Fair serves as their last hurrah, but the supposedly fun event takes an unexpected turn when a famous horse gets stolen.

Review

It's always a very touching subject whenever humans and their love for animals are involved. The connection between them is beyond words and is heartfelt. I love that this third book shows that type of compassion.

This book has been a fun read, most especially because Birdie is back and has a crush on Silki’s good-looking cousin! I have forgotten that they are teenagers, not little kids.

I love the tandem between Silki and Birdie because of their differences. Birdie doesn't like doing dangerous things, while Silki is all about adventure and won't stop until she solves one problem at a time, even if it's risky. The funny thing is that Birdie tags along anyway and ends up doing what Silki wants. I also like the fact that the author never fails to involve Silki's scarves in survival situations.

This book made me remember my cousin who lives in Japan. He has nothing but positive words for Japan and the people. He said they are the most polite people he has ever met in his life that when he goes to other countries, it feels like they are rude even when they're not. It's just that he's become so accustomed to the overwhelming politeness of the Japanese.

Lastly, I always forget to comment about the amazing illustrations in this series, so I'm doing that now. The well-drawn sketches allowed me to have a vivid imagination of the characters and setting. I wouldn’t have imagined them so clearly if it weren’t for the illustrations.

Overall, I’m giving this book 5 out of 5 stars. It was a fun and entertaining story of Silki’s baffling adventure teeming with international undercurrents and intrigue. I highly recommend this book series to readers who love Native American literature.
