Book Review: The Clit

Summary

The Clit is a biography by Queen Tati. As a black lesbian in the Christian community, she depicts the life of a group of black lesbians in their discovery of their own sexuality. The story revolves around Alicia who embarks on her college journey with her best friend and secret lover, Angel. Unlike their previous years together, they now have freedom. They connect with a group of ladies, form an unbreakable bond of friendship, and learn lessons along the way with the realization that freedom doesn’t always provide happiness.

Review

I think a lot of people in the black and LGBTQ community would resonate more with the reality depicted in this story of friendship, sexuality, and self-discovery. The author was true to herself when she described the book as an adequate and accurate representation of black lesbians in the society because she didn’t hold back on information and poured her heart out in telling the experiences that has shaped her to what she is today.

Hence, I’m giving this book 4 out of 5 stars and recommend it to the LGBTQ community. It was more explicit than I imagined, and I thought I was an open-minded person, but this book made me realize that I’m still a bit conservative and quite hesitant in accepting what happens in the private space of the third sex in this modern and more liberated generation. Nevertheless, I commend the freedom of expression manifested in this book by a brave soul who wants to give awareness. I hope that books like this will somehow foster a positive LGBTQ identity and reduce discrimination, marginalization, and isolation that are often associated with the sexual minority, most especially the youth.
