Review
The Faringdons: Empire is a historical fiction by Edwin Balchin and the first book to The Faringdons trilogy. To begin with, let me just say how mesmerized I am with the book cover! This is the first time I am commenting about the cover because I always focus on the contents. But this one, before I even read it, it already captured my attention so Kudos to the designer! Next, I’d have to admit that I don’t know anything about the British history nor any political or social issues that were incorporated in this fiction, so I’d like to thank the author for feeding my knowledge.
What mainly got me engaged in reading this book was the author’s impeccable flow of narrative. From the exposition to the character sketches and the plot highlights, everything was spot on. The only thing I had a hard time with was remembering some characters. I found myself going back to the previous pages whenever I saw names that I couldn’t remember. But of course, not having a good memory is a big part of myself that I’d have to accept. Lastly, I’m glad the author gave a sneak peek of the second and third book! Can’t wait to read them!
I’m giving this book 5 out of 5 stars. It was well-researched, has a very engaging narrative, and the author was able to provide a sense of the characters’ motivation. I highly recommend this book to ALL readers who love historical fiction.
