Book Review: The Great Snake

Summary

The Great Snake is a coming-of-age adventure by Jennifer Mugrage, and the third book to the Scattering Trilogy. Set in North America, the story revolves around Klee who crossed the Land Bridge with her tribe as a child, and grew up in ancient North America. Without a warning, she discovers that she isn't who she thought she was, that her parents aren't her real parents, and her birth father wants her to go with him to found a city dedicated to his snake god. After learning that her entire life has been a lie, can she really trust anyone?

Review

Klee as the main lead is very relatable and I like her character development in the story. Not knowing whom to trust after discovering that everyone isn’t who she thought they were, invoked emotions in me that were very unsettling. And that part when she didn't want to do anything anymore after a horrifying incident, I can perfectly understand when she got tired of everything and wanted to give up. That’s a very normal thing for people. Then, something drives us back to our senses when we realize we have one or more reasons to live.

There are some really good lessons in this book. Like hating our own land/country or wherever we live and wanting so much to abandon it. It is exactly how I feel about where I am right now. How I wish I'd go live somewhere else, but the truth is, it isn't the land that makes it our home, it's the people. So, wherever we are, as long as we're with our beloved ones, that's where our real home is.

Overall, I'm giving this book 5 out of 5 stars. It was highly imaginative, well-depicted, beautifully written, and imparts wisdom about family, culture, relationships, and finding one's self. This book is highly recommended especially to readers who have read the first and second book to the Scattering Trilogy. Warning: This book contains violence and very sensitive topics.
