Summary
The Painter of Time is a historical and fantasy novel by Matthew O'Connell. The story begins when Mackenzie Ferrara starts her new career as a restorer of fine arts in New York City. She is hired at Cloisters, a branch of the Met devoted to the art and architecture of medieval Europe. There, she meets Anthony Bataglia, one of the best restorers of medieval Italian paintings.
Despite having a rough start, Mackenzie and Anthony develop a close working relationship, although Mackenzie is hoping for something more than that. But the more she works with him, the more she notices peculiar patterns and unexplainable similarities in all of his restorations. It seems that Anthony isn't who he claims to be, and Mackenzie is determined to uncover that mystery.
Review
What a great story! I am not even into fine arts and know very little about it because I have a very bad memory. I can only remember things ambiguously, but this book not only imparted knowledge on arts and history, it also inspired me to take interest in them. This was such a great story with a thrilling mystery that readers will find engaging; it’s a good blend of art history and imaginative fiction where the essence of both is manifested.
Overall, this is definitely 5 out of 5 stars. I like the plot twist and flow of narrative, the characters are engaging, and the descriptions of its dual setting are so fascinating that I can vividly imagine this book as a movie. I highly recommend this book to art and history enthusiasts, and readers who just want to experience a great story.
