Book Review: There Be Pirates

Summary

There Be Pirates is a historical romance adventure by Catalina DuBois and one of the books in the Infinity series. The story begins with Sir Matthew Galahad as a fearless pirate hunter. Any enemy of the crown is a foe to Matthew, and pirates are at the top of that list. The war with Spain has ended, Great Britain has a new monarch, and Matthew has a new mission to rid the seas of pirate scourge. After which, he would be granted the glorious title of duke. He is to wed the lovely Duchess Amelia Gray, a prize sought after by every available royal in Europe. Matthew’s new mission would also be his last voyage as his sailing days would end once he becomes duke. Little did he know; he would soon meet his wife Sarah whom he thought he had lost years ago. But not only that, she just happens to be the captain of the pirate ship where Matthew and his crew are bound to be attacked.

Review

First of all, I haven’t read anything about pirates that has full-blown romance in it as much as there is adventure. I think the fusion of both genres in a historical setting is more exciting than any pirate story, and I’m not even a romantic. I cringe a lot at cheesy or corny stuff like the cliché dialogues in romance novels or movies, but this book and any other book in the Infinity series always have something that separate them from romantic cliches while still preserving the classic vibes of historical novels.

What separates this book from other books in the Infinity series, is the fact that Matthew is Sarah’s arch-nemesis and there’s that thrill of them reuniting and uncovering where things went out of hand. This is also possibly the most explicit in language, the most violent, and a little more erotic than the others but not too erotic to be considered that kind of a novel. I definitely can say that there is artistry in the romantic scenes between Sarah and Matthew. I also think this is the longest book I’ve read from the Infinity series so far. Overall, I’m giving it 5 out of 5 stars. It was exciting, informative, adventurous, action-packed, romantic, and I got surprised by the very familiar characters as well. Highly recommended to readers who are into pirate & romance stories.
